Pelvic Organ Prolapse Procedures

17+ Years of In-Depth Medical Experience

A pelvic organ prolapse occurs when an organ in a patient’s pelvic area falls from its original position and pushes against the walls of the patient’s vagina. This typically occurs when the pelvic floor that holds your organs becomes weak due to natural aging, giving birth, or increased weight fluctuations. Pelvic organ prolapse can lead to vaginal bulge, discomfort, pelvic pain and pain with sexual intercourse, depending on the severity of the prolapse.

The bladder, uterus, urethra, rectum, bowel, and vagina are all susceptible to prolapse, although the bladder is the most common to do so. Dr. Emad Hashemi at Women’s Center for Urogynecology has extensive experience with helping treat pelvic organ prolapse and restoring the organs to their proper positions. He is Board Certified in OB/GYN and Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of all related medical issues.

Pelvic Organ Prolapses & Viable Treatments

In addition to childbirth being a primary cause of pelvic organ prolapses, hysterectomies can often lead to collapsed organs due to the removal of the uterus. The uterus supports other organs and when it is removed, those organs may collapse. Pelvic organ prolapses can be exacerbated by having pelvic organ tumors, frequent constipation, long-lasting coughs, or being obese.

Pelvic organ prolapses can be treated in a variety of ways.If you are experiencing vaginal bulge, pain or excessive discomfort we can help you with conservative management and/or a vaginal pessary. If they did not improve the symptoms or resolve the prolapse , surgery may be considered as a definitive treatment to fix the prolapse. The surgery is minimally invasive and can be performed in a comfortable and private setting as an outpatient in a same day surgery center or in a hospital near you.

Several symptoms of pelvic organ prolapses include:

  • Vaginal bulge
  • Feeling pressure from pelvic organs pushing against the wall of your vagina
  • Pain in your vagina during sexual intercourse
  • Feeling a pull in your lower back or groin
  • Feeling full in your lower abdomen
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Bowel problems

Some treatments that may help include:

  • Conservative management & pelvic exercise
  • Vaginal Pessary (Vaginal Rings)
